July 5, 2011Benson Plant Rescue is an organization here in Omaha helping connect with local community gardens and provide plants and flowers at reduced costs. A couple of weeks ago, Rev. Stephanie was honored to be asked to speak at one of their Saturday events. Here is a brief summary, written by Dr. D of Benson Plant Rescue (BPR), of the presentation;
REPORT ON THE “BIG” GARDENS. " Exceptional presentation by Rev. Stephanie Ahlschwede of United Methodist Ministries (UMM) about The BIG Garden project of UMM. Several years back Pastor Ahlschwede wanted to find some means of outreach for her church’s social ministry. She hit upon community gardens and then partnered with the USDA to develop this wonderful blend of how gardening impacts a person’s entire life by changing one’s food lifestyle. People may not think they have a ‘“food lifestyle,” but everyone does. And it’s not just the difference between vegetarians and meat eaters but the whole gamut of healthy or unhealthy choices you make. You do or don’t drink pop. You do or don’t eat a lot of red meat. You do or don’t eat several servings of fruits and vegetables each day. We are what we eat, and controlling consumption defines not only who we are but our entire destiny. So At Risk youth and adults in our culture who simply have no experience in how to “eat healthy” thus need to be guided slowly and skillfully into making the right choices. What is so remarkable about The BIG Garden project is that it takes all people at whatever level they are found and then slowly tries to direct them into wise choices both in and out of the garden. As usual, we filmed the talk and QA session for eventual use on our web site and compilation into a documentary DVD titled “GROWING OMAHA: Urban Farming in Middle America.” If you missed Stephanie in person I think you’ll find her remarks very refreshing and uplifting when the video appears."
We are excited to be partners with BPR. If you would like more information on all of the wonderful work that they do, please
